Battlefield 3

The franchise that revolutionized online multiplayer for PC games is back.

In our world-exclusive cover story, Game Informer unveils the first numbered entry in the Battlefield series since 2005. Many longtime fans are wondering, "what took so long?!" DICE has honed the concept for the true sequel for years, but it wasn't until the company developed the powerful new Frostbite 2 engine that it felt all the pieces were in place to create a proper follow-up. Armed with powerful upgrades like deferred rendering, real-time radiosity, a new animation system borrowed from the EA Sports label, and an exponential leap in destructibility, executive producer Patrick Bach dubs Frostbite 2 "the best piece of technology on the market when it comes to building games."

Anyone else excited about this? There's going to be a reveal trailer tomorrow so i'l just make this topic right here.

Still 49,99 EU here and around the same in dollars.

also:

Battlefield 3 is the true successor to Battlefield 2. Beyond our signature multiplayer, we have also included a full single-player campaign and a co-op campaign – all straight out of the box. As for fan favorite features, how does the return of jets, prone, and 64-player multiplayer (on PC) sound? All this built with our powerful new game engine Frostbite 2, which you'll hear and see a lot of in the months leading up to launch.

I liked BF2 alot. Spent countless of days on Karkand. I do hope they learned from on of their major faults. Unlimated restocking of Nades. << Killed many games.

Lets hope the gameplay leans towards BF2's style.

"In Battlefield 3, players step into the role of the elite U.S. Marines where they will experience heart-pounding single player missions and competitive multiplayer actions ranging across diverse locations from around the globe including Paris, Tehran and New York,watch buildings crumble and cover disappear as bullets and explosion tear through your surroundings! Even landmarks you recognise aren't safe from the destruction you'll inflict!"

Only really played BF2 recently, wasn't playing it when it was majorly popular. Loving BFBC2!
Glad that prone and jets are back. Although not having prone is an interesting experience...

32 player teams, wow its gonna get busy :wink:

i seem unable to find any BF2/BC2 servers that are not plagued with people team killing each other in order to steal vehicles. Is one of the most annoying things i remember from those games

it happens on normal servers too

if FF is off, they can still target the vehichles themselves

hopefully it wont be as common on BF3

yea this is what worries me

every trailer makes a game look awesome. But Dice's previous offerings were filled with bugs and annoying glitches from day 1, hopefully BF3 will not be as bad

Little bit of info from BashnSlash
Our friend Noches reports that the German language Gamestar magazine had this to say in their March edition:

General Comments:

* Patrick Bach: The Bad Company series has had little influence on BF3. BF3 will be a direct sequel to BF2
* The BF3 team encompasses about 240 people, or three-to-four times more people that the BF2 team.
* Impressive lighting effects. Lighting technology uses "Light probes" on the map. One probe has more light information than one complete map in BC2. It also works with dynamically changing terrain.
* Gamestar witnessed a presentation that ran on a quad core cpu with a Radeon 5800
* Destructability was apparently impressive.
* Character animations: A combination of ragdoll and scripted death animations, which Gamestar found to be pretty realistic.
* ANT and motion capturing technology from EA is being used which is being used on Sports games like Madden NFL.
* Unbelievable sound: Sound will be better than in BC2. One can easily locate shooters. Most realistic combat sound so far.

Frostbite engine:

* Physics, Destruction
* Can display a huge number of dynamic lights
* DICE: Engine too complex for hobby modders. No mod tools at first, not sure whether there will ever be.
* One object can have up to 83 audio channels

Single Player:

* BC-2-style wise-cracking humor, will be not be used.
* Spoiler: SP is set in a North American forested mountain terrain. There will be a European city setting and Iraq 2014 with 1st Recon Marines. At least one solo mission as jet pilot.
* Enemies: Iraqi resistance army PLR
* Some soldiers faces belong to DICE developers
* Several slow motion moments inSP
* At least one fight scene where the player has to click the right or left mouse button quick enough to win.
* Earthquakes in SP cause a Humvee to disappear into a huge crack, a high building collapses and hits a black hawk helicopter, falling pieces of buildings can hurt characters in sp and mp
* DICE didn't say whether it will be possible to give commands to comrades

Multiplayer:

* Lars Gustavsson: MP designer is part of DICE since 2000
* Max players pc: 64 Consoles: 32
* MP info:
* F-16 and Su-27 spotted, modern helicopters, tanks
* 4 soldier classes, 5 accessories kits
* Maps will be as big as in BF2
* Dice promises more unlock-able weapons and tools, the look can be changed, better balanced ranking system
* Hardcore mode: likely as it is popular
* Commander mode: Very unlikely
* Replay function: (aka Battlerecorder) Dice is testing it
* Coop mode: Has been announced, but Dice also called normal matches vs bots coop mode too
* Dedicated servers: Definitely
* Prone: Yes. Dice wants to avoid dolphin diving

Gamestar's review:

Positive: Sound, destruction, a real Battlefield game
Negative: Story-telling methods in SP is getting a bit old

interesting, shame about bringing back prone though :( .

Hopefully they will do something to prevent the annoyance of dolphin diving. Even if just a delay between getting into prone position and being able to fire. Was too fast in BF2 as im sure we all know!

Oh they will have!
Look at all the practise they've had! Codename Eagle, Battlefield 1942, The Road to Rome, Secret Weapons of World War II, Battlefield Vietnam, Special Forces, Euro Force, Armoured Fury, Battlefield 2 : Modern Combat, Battlefield 2142, Northern Strike, Bad Company, Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield 1943, Bad Company 2, Bad Company 2 : Vietnam and Battlefield Play4Free.

I'm sure they've learnt how to make a game flawless, animate perfectly and create massive maps that work perfectly, eliminate hackers, servers that don't fail, how to keep the community happy, etc by now. I mean look at BF2:BC - no bugs in that any more! No-one complaining about any problems any more, not with their new skilled coding they learnt in the past 2 months.

.... wait a minute!!!! :lol:

Looks great. I hope it won't be all in cities or battles like 8 vs 8. This is not how BF should be. What I liked in original BF 1942 was that maps were huge and that you could use any vehicle. :D :D

bf1942 was great, i enjoyed the big open maps with countryside, farms, fields, forests etc instead of just urban combat.

Am hoping that soon we can get the 64 player limit going up a bit more, has been 64 players since bf1942 came out back in 2003 (ish).

Perhaps it is the ideal number and if its too high will just be too chaotic?

i think with this console generation people have been taking steps backwards to focus on bringing the best graphics to consoles and reducing other features (such as player counts) its only now that companies are starting to find the ways to incorporate the other features.

What the %^&# is this? This looks like another COD clone. :? If there are 32 vs 32 games I bet maps are so huge and designed in that way that you won't see more than 2 enemies during 1 round/session.

well the more realistic they get, the closer they are bound to become graphicwise.
I just hope the gameplay will make the difference once more, they did a good job in designing the maps for bfbc2 imo, at least for rush mode, now they must push it to the next step.
