Mics

Postby GTFO. OneManAndHisGun » 17 May 2009, 20:59

Is there anyway to change what TF2 (or any) should be monitoring for the mic - I'm getting nothing out even though I know the mic's working - I can hear my own voice and when using the test facility ingame, it works albeit with 2-3 second delay and lots of buzzing. Tried disabling gain, turning volume up & down with no joy.

I have built in 5:1 surround on the mobo - tried changing to this in the options (and 7:1) with no joy. Are there any more settings somewhere?

Try testing in windows?

Delay is not good, probably means it's coded/decoded for no good reason.

It works fine in Windows, can record from it quite clearly or use it on Skype. Just can't get it to work on Steam stuff.

do you test it "in game" or in steam? I had an issue with alchemy doing something similar. It worked in windows, in steam etc but *not* in game. Alchemy had a random dll being loaded in sound.ini which only fired when the game was loading whereas steam voice worked fine.

I've tried it ingame and get absolutely nothing - not even the flag showing.

My mobo is a Gigabyte P35-DS3L if that helps.

mine was down to

c:\program files\steam\steamapps\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\team fortress 2\DSOUND.ini
c:\program files\steam\steamapps\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\team fortress 2\DSOUND.dll

basically I renamed dsound.ini and dsound.dll to gofuckoffalchemydsound.ini gofuckoffalchemydsound.dll and it fixed my problems.

May seem pretty obvious but have you plugged your mic directly into the default sound cards mic socket. I had similar problems with my mic wherby it would work fine everywhere including steam tests but not in actual steam games as on running them it set the mic input to the default socket.

In 'sound' in your control panel or whatever it is called, you should be able to change the default input device. Do this then run TF2.

Done all of the above although I don't have the Dsound.dll etc and mic was already default. No idea why it won't work - worked OK on other games. Oh well.

Well, tried all that, got new drivers, tried disabling Realtek HD audio, mucked about with config.cfg. Short of threatening the PC with immediate and extreme violence, I can't see what else to try. None of it has made the slightest difference.

The mic on the Realtek should be the default mic port?

Yep, it's default - it works in everything else - and it worked in other games I've played. So wtf it won't work in TF2 (or any of the Valve games) I can't fathom.

I'm not that bothered tbh. I think it most likely a mobo problem. Just have to stay mute.

My motherboard couldn't get any sound from my new mic, found this out after buying 2 mics though seeing as my other machine also uses Realtek onboard audio. Eventually I just bought a sound card, you can get some really cheap ones but I got this one.

I have a Soundblaster Live gathering dust. Used it on XP32 as I couldn't get surround sound on the onboard, then moved to X64 and couldn't get the Soundblaster to work! So depending on what OS, normally the SB is pretty compatible.

You may have it cheap.

Well, real cheap.

I can't guarantee getting it fully functional under Vista though (Did find various drivers, but those are drivers only), sorry... Would really loved to have helped you out.

are you using a microphone that is jack plugs or usb ?

for hearing your voice back through the speakers , just go into control panel and mute the microphone , and if you get you hear your voice ingame through your headset and the mic is deffo muted in control panel type voice_loopback 0 in consol.

maybe this may help :D

ps: also check in your cfg you have sv_voiceenable 1.

OMG I had an issue once where I could not get mic to work at all, even after trying what looks like you have already.
Then I happened across a file called 'voice_ban.dt' located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\USERNAME\team fortress 2\tf.

I deleted this file and restarted steam/tf2 and voice worked. The file was back though when I checked after, but mic/voice still worked!
