Mumble Server

Postby GTFO. G » 27 Aug 2010, 18:10

We've scrapped the vent server, and recently set up a mumble server.

The details:

Host: server1.gtfogaming.co.uk
Port: 64738
Username: your forum username
Password: your forum password

Download the client from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mumble/ ... e/download

You also probably want to disable the automatic voice broadcast - by default you broadcast when a certain amount of noise is detected. Disable that and use push to talk.

You can also download skins for mumble: some good ones here: http://mumble-tower.de/downloads/mumble-skin - I reccomend this particular set: http://mumble-tower.de/downloads/mumble ... umble-skin
After applying the skin, you should restart mumble for it to apply properly.

We've ditched vent, mainly because it's a nightmare to administrate - random people turning up constantly for their MMORPG scrims etc.

So to get onto mumble, you must be a forum member, simple!

Voice quality seems pretty good (slightly better than Vent I think) - and it has a neat overlay ingame showing who's talking. It also supports positional audio, although I can't seem to tell the difference.
When people ask me "Plz" just because it's shorter than "Please" - I feel perfectly justified to answer "No" because it's shorter than "Yes"

positional audio is self administrated, if you set someone to "left front" his voice will sound as if coming from left front. its not positional with the game location and your orientation in it vs where that person is in game.
When I found that, I didn't bother with it anymore. no need. Its handy if you have regular chats with a bunch of ppl and need to discern who's talking at the same time etc.

Ah, thanks for that clarification data. Still a neat voice system.

wrong data...

What is Positional Audio?

Positional Audio is a feature of Mumble that places the people talking to you in a certain position relative to your own depending on their actual position in the game you are playing. This way you can hear the person like his actual avatar in-game would be talking to you.

Does the overlay actually work? If so, I'm interested. I'll still be using my laptop's built-in mic though :P

The overlay works perfectly, although the actual sound part of it only works for me when im NOT In a game. Soon as i join a game it turns into a dalek party. :(

Can we get the server updated to the latest version (1.2.3) instead of its current 1.2.2?
