New Rig

Postby GTFO. CrooZin » 12 Mar 2010, 12:38

As some of you guys know already, I've been slowly buying parts for a new comp over the last few months, So I've finally put it all together and heres whats in it:

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping
Asus Rampage II Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
BenQ G2420HDBL 24" Widescreen LED Monitor
Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard
Logitech G9 Mouse
LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter

I've done some OC test on it and got it running stable at 4Ghz, but have set it back to standard until I start rendering my 3D models with it. So far I'm very happy with it and it plays all the games I have the way they should be played :D

Only a 5770? Why not the 5850, which is only £80 more? I suppose you could always crossfire with another 5770 for 5870-matching performance.

And if you're *REALLY* into your 3D rendering work (and have £800+ to spare), the 6-core Core i7-980X is coming out soon :P

you are the first person I know with a 5770, i'll watch your views of it with interest as that is probably going to be my next card.

Cant fault it yet, plays BC2 on 1920x1080 all settings on high, and x4 AA at around an average of 60fps.
As Reloaded said, once I think its struggling a bit with new games, I'll probably just buy another one and Crossfire them. But that wont be for awhile I'd say

Very nice setup...!

Hmm, had my eye on a 5850, maybe its overkill and a 5770 will do.

I've had the 5770 for a month or so now, been great. Getting fps of 100+ with almost maxed on TF2.
For KK: Can run ETW and NTW with maxed out graphics.
Havn't tried it on BC2 (as I havn't played it... I will soon!) but Crooz already gave you that :P

Sorry for the hijack Crooz.
Just tried BC2 with maxed graphics @ 1680x1050 and got 30FPS as lowest.
Not that i know much about this stuff (hardware blabla), but would recommend the 5770 :) Not too expensive either.

I've been using an HD 5770 for a while now, and its very good at what it does. Especially for the price. And it overclocks to high heavens. As stardard the GPU runs at 850Mhz, i have mine pushed upto 960Mhz and it remains 100% stable. It will easily go further than that but the CCC is too limited. And Asus released VC Editions of the 5series which can be overclocked even further still due to the user defined Voltage Tweaks. Very good value for money.

I was looking at the 5870/5850 when I bought this because the 5's are stunning cards. But the 5870 bottlenecks on high end i7's, and I suspect that even the 5770 is being bottlenecked by my Phenom II.
2 of them in CrossFire will be very good for gaming, especially in BC2 and such like. I used to CrossFire HD 3870's. Using a 2nd card really increases the horsepower for demmanding shader and lighting tasks and boosts framerates considerably.

-Edit
I have the G9 mouse aswell. it r winz0r.

Not really, it depends on the resolution. The 5870 is a high-end card and needs to be driven at high resolutions (at least 1920x1080) to get the most out of it. Compare benchmark results against a 5970 at high resolutions and you'll see it's still the GPU that's the bottleneck. At low resolutions below 1680x1050, the card pretty much snoozes through its rendering tasks and is waiting on the CPU for further data a lot of the time.

Totally agree Reloaded, but it does depepnd alot on the game, and as you say, depending on the running resolution rather than visual settings and such like.
Guru3D reviewed it prior to release, and when the i7 965 was causing the bottleneck, only by increasing the resolution to 1920x1200 did the fps even out. With the all the new driver releases since then, performance has increased somewhat. But I suspect as you've rightly said that only on 1920x1200 or higher will the GPU be running along side the CPU instead of causing it to bottleneck at the CPU.
In some cases its outperforming the 1792Mb nVidia GTX 295; but in some tests, the extra 768Mb video memory gives the GTX a slight advantage.

The monitor Croozin has chosen runs natively at 1920x1080, so a 5870 will cruise through gaming without causing much concern to itself. A 5770 runs the same amount of GDDR5 as a 5870 and can be overclocked beyond standard 5870 speeds, so adding a 2nd 5770 for £125 will give stunning gaming performance.

Very nice rig there CrooZin. You've done well there. Me wants

Seeing you get a new rig and me taunting you for not going down the eyefinity route got me thinking. Why don't I get an eyefinity gaming rig? So I did -

I got them to swap out the 5870 for a 5970 instead. Quite looking foward to playing BC2 multiplayer when it shows up.

I'm saving for a very similar rig like that - but that won't be happening for a couple of years at least. Biggest issue is that student digs don't have enough space for an eyefinity setup. :P

Also, to whoever mentioned Dominator RAM, I was reading this article on Bit-Tech where they analysed the performance effect of using various types of RAM. Their general conclusion was that overall, RAM speed has a negligible impact on performance, latency makes more of a difference than bandwidth, but most importantly that higher performance RAM isn't worth the extra cost - just buy the cheapest 1600Mhz, C9 kit you can find. Kingston does have low-voltage kits available that run at 1.25V-1.35V though, and that does have a significant effect on power consumption so they may be worth buying.
