netgear homeplug 200mb adapters

Postby GTFO. kk20 » 20 Mar 2010, 12:54

I got me four of these: http://www.netgear.co.uk/xav101.php

I live in a stone house that pretty much eats wireless signals and the wife isnt too happy abut me running cables round the house. Drilling through walls simply isnt an option. Anyway. The homeplug things say they are 200mb which after the encryption (which im happy to turn off but it seems you cant) is probably more like 100mb. Ive not run ixia on the run yet but it will stream 1080p so it cant be that bad. I can also copy at 10Mb a sec which is pretty much the limit for my SSHSCP link anyway.

To set them up you plug them in. Thats it. No messing about, no configuration. For 4 I paid £80 off amazon which was a bargain. Be careful as amazon were selling 85Mb ones for the same price.

Id recommend them to people who have difficulty with wireless signals and dont need gigabit.

Have you had any issues with interference or with circuits being on different power phases? And does the whole network work transparently like regular ethernet? My friend's interested in using HomePlug, but I've had no experience with it.

P.S. Having your house professionally cabled = gigabit ethernet everywhere! :D

Biggest issue I had with them is they don't work so well when connected to extension cords.

I used to have a pair of the very early ones, one of which was on an extension and had no trouble with them.

I'm quite tempted by this four pack as it'd be a better connection for my gaming laptop than wireless, plus I'd like to move my switch/media server/web server/ftp server/wireless access point into the conservatory where it's generally a bit cooler than the cabinet under my TV.

Does anyone know if it'd work with the output from my cable modem plugged directly into one of these plugs and then three other devices (laptop, web server and printer) plugged into the other three? I suspect the modem has to go directly into a hub/switch and then that be connected to one of the plugs.

the main one is on an extension on the downstairs ring main. The extension is on a socket on a different ring main, my PC is on a socket on the downstairs ring main and the upstairs xbox is on an extension on the upstairs ring main.

The big interference devices are on the cooker ring main. Not tried it with the microwave on yet. The house was rewired when I moved in about 5 years ago so the wiring in the house is good with a modern consumer unit. That might help.

The only BAD thing about the netgear ones - you can only use netgear devices i.e. they ARENT really homeplug compliant. The devolo ones are apparantly better. Either way they work for me. The primary one is plugged into my BE box which is a router anyway. A cable modem might need a crossover cable - im not sure if they are auto MDX or not/

Having struggled to get a decent wireless connection to an outdoor brick shed at the bottom of my garden, I bought these the other week for £34.99 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150039

I've also got both ends plugged into extension cables, and they are on different circuits as well. However, despite this they perform very well - I'm able to stream live tv, you tube in HD etc with no problems at all.

Only slight downer is they appear to have gone up by £15 for the time being... probably come back down again knowing ebuyer.

I'm another convert to Homeplug and being using it since before they recalled the old Netgear variants and sent me shiny new ones.

I've got three of these 4 port jobs http://www.netgear.co.uk/wallplugged_switch_xe104.php

One in the lounge behind my wizzy new Sammy LED connected to it and the PS3 (and hopefully to the HD box when they activate the ethernet one day), another in my office which my main PC and my work laptop are connected to and the final one upstairs connected to a Sony MediaCentre PC and occasional notebooks/netbooks I'm fixing.

Got an XEPS103 (space saver) connected to the router and media streamer in the other lounge.

My house has been extended so is on different rings but have had a new consumer box fitted - never had a minutes bother with any of the kit. Superb invention.

oddly enough I have had issues with mine this week. Ive bought a new tumble drier but that seems to be it for changes (and I havent been running the tumble drier with the weather being good). They seem to lose sync every now and again, a simple on/off seems to do it for another few days. Might try a different socket.

Baz mate I'm dubious as to why you want to watch videos from t'internet in a brick shed at the end of your garden......

hes a squatter. Now he's nicking their internet too. Very clever if you ask me. Fixed mine by taking one of them off a 4-way and putting it in the socket. all is well again.

:D Hmmm now I read it back it does sound a little odd.... For the record I've converted it to a gym and spend my evenings getting hot and sweaty in there... hang on that doesn't sound right either..... :?

Plugs are still streaming nicely though.

I just got a pack containing 1 XAV101 and 1 XAV1004. Work just fine and dandy for me.

Got my iMac and a NAS connected to the 1004. Both on the end of power strips, too.

im not sure if it is driver related, as the drivers that came with my PC refuse to install on windows 7 as they were made for vista, so i just let the windows auto download thing do its magic.

Could that be the cause?

if so i best get looking for some drivers to a network card which i don't know

It has to be drivers then. My own Nvidia onboard network cards were both disconnecting because of driver issues lol.

right well i have got them both seeing each other now through the software, but i just dont have a clue how i link them up, i typed the password for the homeplug that is connected to my router, but do i need to do the same on the router one so that it sees the pc one?

EDIT: right now they wont see each other, got a feeling it might be extension related so going to pull all my wardrobe out to plug them both into wall sockets.

Bloody crap stuff, who made me buy these :D

Don't do that :P

A recent batch of windows updates updated my network card with the wrong drivers - took me a while to eventually realise that... (reboot router, numerous times, unplug cable numerous times, rage, repeat a few times... last resort check device manager and latest driver updates, bingo)
When people ask me "Plz" just because it's shorter than "Please" - I feel perfectly justified to answer "No" because it's shorter than "Yes"

I always download the drivers from the makers of the chipset of it and install those. Saved me SO much trouble. The windows updates for those drivers are only a "indication" for me to check if maybe the maker of the chipset has updated them, and I download those directly. The windows update drivers I just right-click and put on "hide". Most times they make it worse instead of better. (especially with those all-in-one stuff things, combine of printer/scanner/media/copier/etc NEVER do those updates).

Dunno if you have a card in it, or have it onboard on the motherboard (if so, which make/model, check their site for documentation on what the chipset is for the network card)

Actually, it's an "indication" that your current drivers are massively out of date, as the Windows Update ones tend to be at least 9 months old :)

That said, Windows Update is good for network/wireless card drivers and Intel integrated graphics drivers.
