When migrating a server, dont forget to update the clients with the new DNS address (DHCP is for wusses) *before* you decomission the DNS server.

much brown trouser moment when the domain couldnt be found.

Oh I have plenty of fail. Like the time I accidentally detached a database instead of taking it offline. Bye Bye logins.

lol. I dropped a database table once which held a clients online customers purchase orders, the client was not happy and I spent the next two hours reverting the database to the most recent backup (midnight the night before). Bad times.

@kk20: I think DHCP was invented to prevent brown trouser moments like those ;)

For anyone who's lost database data, at least it didn't happen by entering a record:

Why not just route traffic from the old IP to the new one?

The old server is still on the network, I was transferring roles and demoting from DC then I removed DNS. I had a few more things to do on the server so I left it overnight. It was the next day the shit hit the fan as none of the domain PCs could access the domain catalog (so my DNS changeover computer logon script wouldnt work). DOH!

I quickly reinstalled DNS on the old server, added a secondary zone and let the clients run the script. I'll disable the lot next week when I have 90% of clients done. Once the server is off the network completely i'll reroute and add DNS records.
