Server Downtime/Updates Thread

Postby GTFO. G » 01 Jul 2008, 23:00

This thread will be updated when servers go down, due to updates. Just so people know there isn't an issue we dont know about.

Downtime on 81.19.219.83 03/07/2008 15:33

I suspect a new exploit for DODS, it eats all the servers RAM until it's unresponsive, awaiting reboot from killercreation. (They cant access the box either)

Updated the server plugins... Since the last dods and tf2 updates, servers have been crashing.

Hi Guys,

I posted a thread in general regarding HLstatX updates. Is this server issue contributing
to event history updates? Please read. Basically my events have not updated since 4th July.

Last played on Server #7.

Cheers,

22 oct 08 update to tf2

Postby GTFO. al » 22 Oct 2008, 03:48

Seems valve has pushed out an update to TF2. Was doing some late night checking and noticed they were all empty. Took a nosey and console was saying they were out of date so all the TF2 servers have been updated. A long time since I did an update, even though it's one command in command prompt, so if anything is screwed up I apologise in advance. In any event taking them down to be updated will clear out a lot of the RAM on the servers and hopefully they'll all play a little bit smoother too.

Looking at what it has updated...seems to be mainly some alterations to dustbowl, granary and badwater maps but nothing too major overall.

All servers down/rebooting for BIOS updates - apparently there's a fix for some kind of network controller issue where the connection would be dropped.

Well, the only people who will fill it are regs and considering the fake clients are no longer active there then it's hard to fill with only 2-3 people on there. I've helped fill it in the past but I haven't had the time really over the last few days.

Me 2, What has happened it was always full a few months ago and now it always empty? where has everyone gone?

Not just #9 Badwater, but also #8,#11 are always empty and #10 is half full most of the time. It like all the regs have disappeared over night.

Today I stayed on #9 Badwater (at 8pm) for half hour on my own just to see if anyone would join me, but only 3 signed on and then left straight away.

Don't know what has happened but I hope you are working on getting them back full, because its a shame to have servers empty.

It seems they've been delisted... 8 and up are not showing in my server list (internet tab).

The join and disconnects are costing more points on it than there are build up on it, (@ join -15, ever minute some stays its upped +1, after 45 a max of 30 points is reached.)

couses for such fast disconnects can be:
- fake players, some joins and finds nobody on it, and leaves immediatly (-15 points)
- lower number of players than expected, and leaving for a more filled server.

In both cases, ppl don't have the patience to wait till some more have joined. Can't blame 'm, cos if on a low player count server I'll leave soon as well... unless some occasionally 1v1 occurs... but a big map and low player count won't work. (especially badwater/3rd part goldrush.... the walk is just too long). when 1v2 it is verry aggrevating for the lone player... he has practically not much chance. If more, it depends of the composition of the teams of it keeps 'm interested.... if 1 side is rolling over the other, it will go fast empty again.

So GTFO servers become known for it, and then ppl just jump in to check if ppl are out there, and disconnect again if not. Wouldn't be surprised if the serverlogs showed a lot of connect/disconnects up to the delisting.... and then only regs did connect and disconnected.

Solutions, the only way is to keep ppl at least 16 minutes on them, so the points of the server go up, and got listed again. That may be hard, so ppl should mass join a server, have couple of rounds and let it fill up, then go to next server with 4 or 5 and let it fill up as well...
As well have some advertising to add those servers to their favorites would be handy too maybe.

About the "fake" players... well. read some from GTFO on the forum that it filled the servers faster up... Only the logs will tell what exactly happened that the points dropped. (Connect, ammound of time connected, disconnect). All I personally see is a server with 8-14 fake players, I join, there's nobody on, I leave immediatly, and start looking for the next server. If I wanted to join a (almost) empty server, i would have chosen the empty one. At that time I'm looking for a half-filled server with 10 to 15 ppl.... cos I find it more fun in such numbers.

Just had a look myself and your correct. I have them bookmarked in favorites or use the GameMenu.res for my reserved slot. So I don't use the internet tab in the servers list. I think this delisted system blows and valve needs to get rid of it.

Not saying I know anything about how the servers work or anything, not like you guys who run them. But it's clear that the .81 servers are doing badly so can't you move some of them to the .82 and .83. And then move some of the full popular servers like 2fort\goldrush to the .81? Will this get them out of the delisted zone?

Again I might be talking (typing) shit so forgive me. Sorry.

I agree, some add us to your favorites, when playing the game might help, like some other TF2 servers do. Or putting the list of servers with ip addresses on your gtfo steam page, then doing monthly announcements that you have 11 TF2 servers come and play etc.. You have nearly 20,000 members tell them to come and play.

Don´t think it´ll work. In the end it could get even worse by messing around with the well populated servers.
Unfortunately there´s not that much information about the delisting process. According to former news it should last for one month which - in my opinion - should be over by now. So it´s hard to say if they will come back automatically or not.

One thing that may work could be to shut down servers #11 and #12 (maybe #08 too) temporarily and try to get the score up with those servers who still have some population left (#09 and #10). Disabling the fake plugin completely on that box could also be helpful for now.

Valve has build it in for some reasons: http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2338
Valve wrote:The scoring system had to penalize lying without penalizing custom game rules,

So the "bad" experiance need to be worked on.

And btw, #04 was about week ago also a while delisted.

To clear up a few things.

.81 is delisted - no other IP's are.

I've modified the plugin to disable fakeclients for the quieter hours of the early mornings.

Popular servers cannot move to a delisted IP, as well, it's delisted.

Delisting is for 1 month, we should be back in action soon. #10 is still popular because it was book marked by many so can still be seen in favourites.

While I fully understand and agree with Valve's want to remove bad servers, they should be doing it by IP and PORT not just a blanked delist on a whole server (this affects all servers including different games). We had some very popular servers on .81, and one unpopular server took down the lot.

The join and disconnects are costing more points on it than there are build up on it, (@ join -15, ever minute some stays its upped +1, after 45 a max of 30 points is reached.)

Where is this formula from?

all servers restart exactly at the same time.....5:30 AM

maybe an idea to do it staged, so if 1 server goes down, the others are still available (when that one goes down, you can go back)

We are aware of the current tf2 servers downtime. it seems they are refusing to update for us :P

UPDATE 10:20: Servers are back up, however their configs appear to have been reset so the servers names don't appear in the server browser, instead they are just labeled as "Team Fortress 2" e.t.c. to get around this you need to redownload the gtfo gui (which valve broke again) and then use that for the time being.

There is also a possibility that reserve slots are broken again

UPDATE 2 11:03: A server fix is being applied to all servers shortly to fix the reserve slots/plugins being broken so all servers will go down.

UPDATE 3 11:19: Servers have been updated and are all working now

Guys both DODS and TF2 servers have been experiencing lag issues over the past few weeks, we are well aware of it and it appears to be connected to under optimized recent TF2 updates which have caused instability to the dedicated servers, therefore it will affect all servers on a dedicated machine (hence the DODS lag as we run a variety of games on each dedicated server)

We ask that if you are on a server that begins to lag that you drop into the GTFOGaming chatroom by clicking here and reporting it to one of the admins in chat who can then forward the message onto server admins and they will restart the server.

Guys you may have noticed you was unable to connect to the DODS servers since about 9.30pm tonight, this was due to a new plugin being pushed onto the servers but we had not tested it correctly and was causing people to be kicked instantly

We have now fixed it for the time being and you should all be able to join again.

Sorry for any inconvenience :)

TF2 Servers are in the process of being de-cluttered and plugins updated, you will notice less lag and crashes from now on across all servers. And some new features thanks to updated plugins. :D

Can that block plugin be removed that was installed to prevent the multiple sentries/dispenser bug?

Handling of my destroy/build new script gets hampered by it, and the bug itself hasn't appeared anymore for a long time.

just looking at the plugin list, we don't appear to have a plugin that blocks it. However i may just be missing it :P

Anyways in other news, GameME stats are currently down due to updating the plugins which has bodged it up :) So there will be no stat tracking until probably tomorrow sometime. Sorry
