Spotify + Facebook... Anyone else pissed off?

Postby GTFO. G » 27 Sep 2011, 22:10

Just cancelled my premium subscription, I won't support this move.

I was a fairly recent subscriber, and loved it until they did this facebook integration, and made it mandatory for new spotify users to have a facebook account.

What alternative, if any, are you using lucky? I guess I now have to wait for rdio to launch in the UK...

so spotify make it mandatory that u have to have a facebook account???

wth?? do u not get the option of not doing that???

is the reason because they want the exposure via facebook to increase subscriptions/visits etc???

Correct, if you are a new user, you cannot use spotify without signing up for facebook.

I had my spotify account linked so I could see friends playlists. Now the integration requires a lot more facebook data, and shares every song played with facebook (you can choose not to have every song published on your facebook page though - nice after thought).

I suspect the reason is Facebook has made a big investment in Spotify, and/or is going to take them over.

Now is the ideal time for Google to launch a music service.

I tend to use grooveshark. Seems to have more obscure stuff on it too from what I can tell.

Used to love spotify myself but haven't used it in a long time. An easy way round forced facebook integration is to setup a fake facebook account with nothing on it to link to. Then it can integrate with...no one.

That is what some Spotify employees have suggested disgruntled users do ... however this is against Facebook terms of service. But that doesn't solve the problem anyway, the issue is the data being shared with Facebook in the first place, and whatever data Spotify hold about you.

Doesn't bother me, I closed my account back in May when they decided the best way to differentiate their products was to artificially regress the functionality of free accounts rather than improve the premium accounts.

It's not mattered to me - I'm signed up for Google's Music beta (through a proxy to bypass the US-only restriction), uploaded all my music there and now I can stream/download it to my phone or computers whenever I want. :)

The service Google has at the moment, and Amazon have cater for a different "type" of music listener. If you have loads of your own CD's / Downloads that's great to upload them and stream them anywhere. I don't have many CD's and don't intend to, I want to stream music and discover new music, something Spotify had nailed perfectly.

I doubt they'd be sharing your payment information but if it's personal information then I'm not exactly worried.

When I signed up the information given was: my username choice, email address, country, post code (but not house number), date of birth (which I entered fake information in)

Not really a lot.

It's a lot for Facebook to mine, aggregate your music likes and dislikes, follow clicks through the free Spotify client and finally sell on to advertisers.

The principal is the data being shared with no choice in the matter.

It happens all the time

People still think Tesco invented the clubcard to give people discounts. All it was set up for was to track exactly what everyone buys.

But you weren't forced to have a facebook account to get your Tesco club card, and have no choice in Tesco telling Facebook what you buy. Seriously, it's not difficult.

Out of interest, did anyone read today's copy of the Metro? It had an article headline "Spotify users in uproar over Facebook decision" - below it was a big photo of an oil refinery explosion (probably from Libya). The juxtaposition was hilarious

I used to use spotify free all the time. And then they went from having like 430 hours of listening a week, to 10 hours of listening a month!! So I just listen to music on youtube.

As for fb, that layout has just completely fucked with my mind.

I can't seem to understand the problem. My spotify haven't changed anything. I do have a facebook account, but it's not connected with my spotify account in any way, and it still works as before. Spotify doesn't force me to do anything. What am i missing?

Edit: oh, it's a problem for new users or those that already had their facebook account connected with spotify. Well, lucky for me it doesn't affect me.
